The challenge

The multicipality of Vlissingen is developing an ambitious plan for the Binnenhavens and the Scheldekwartier (inland ports). Renowned builders of naval ships and mega yachts, fish markets, maritime organizations and offshore companies are located in the area. More than 1.500 meter of quay walls are often used for the docking of vessels, transhipment, transportation and heavy lifts. A proactive maintenance plan is crucial to ensure safety and the technical stability of the quays in the near future. The multicipality wants to gain understanding in the current conditions of the port constructions and the necessary maintenance strategy.

The inland ports are crucial for the profitability of the maritime industry and employment

Municipality of Vlissingen

Our contribution

The municipality of Vlissingen contracted Walhout Civil to conduct specialized investigations and inspections of the inner ports (Binnenhavens, Dokhaven, Vissershaven and Koopmanshaven). The current quay walls have fallen into decline and are outdated. In particular, the gravity quays and old pile walls are out of shape. Walhout Civil has implemented an effective maintenance strategy, in order to extend the theoretical residual life span of the quays. This strategy saved some millions of euros for new construction. We advised the municipality in the design of new quay walls, jetties, landing stages and fundations. A summary of our activities:

  • Historical desk research
  • Visual inspections and NEN 2767-4 Asset condition inspections
  • Professional dive inspections and steel thickness measurments
  • Bathymetric surveys and sludge / densitity measurements
  • Geotechnical investigations
  • Assessment of current quay walls
  • Assessment of overall geotechnical stability
  • Assessment of theoretical residual life span
  • Consultancy of future approach and maintenance
  • Design of quay wall constructions and jetties
